Can I just make a video of my wishes?

Bryer Schmegelsky’s Story

In the summer of 2019, people across Canada were following the story of two young fugitives from British Columbia who were on the run in the wake of three apparently random murders. Ultimately, the two young suspects were found dead by suicide. One of them, Bryer Schmegelsky, had made a video recording shortly before his death that has been described as Bryer’s “last will and testament.” After some negotiations, RCMP allowed his father Alan Schmegelsky, to view the video, which was being held as evidence in the case.

Lawyer’s Comment: In case you are contemplating making a video will, you should know that a video recording is not a valid will in Ontario. You still have to do it the old-fashioned way, in writing on paper.
